The Sakya Academy

Sakya Academy

Sakya Academy is a progressive monastic school dedicated to offering its young monks an all-round education based on  Buddhist principles, wherein they can acquire wisdom as well as knowledge. The Academy in Dehradun was founded by Khöndung Gyana Vajra Rinpoche, under the guidance of His Holiness the Sakya Trizin. It embodies its founder’s vision of bringing young Sakyapa monastics into the 21st century while immersing them in the Buddhist tradition that is the mainstay of their monastic training. The school now harbors some 200 monk students, with a view to eventually accommodate 250 monks and 250 nuns.

The principle aim of Sakya Academy is to impart the young novices with a Buddhist education and the preservation of Buddhist teachings. Another aim is to keep alive the unique teachings and tradition of the Sakyapa masters. The Academy will also provide a modern education to help the students to relate to the outside world and make sure that their Buddhist learning is relevant to it.
